Satellite History

The history of satellite technology started in 1957. This is when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the first artificial satellite. In the following year, the United States got in the game when it launched a small scientific satellite named Explorer I. This was the beginning of the space age as well as satellite communication technology. This new technology was further advanced In the 1960's when many new satellites were launched into orbit.

Syncom II, the first communications satellite, was launched by the United States in 1963. In 1973, Canada launched it's first communications satellite, named Anik I, and this marked their first satellite television network.

Satellite TV History

Satellite tv was born in the late 70's. At this time, HBO and other companies started broadcasting their signals to the cable companies. Not long after this, other companies took advantage of this and started selling satellite tv systems and dishes in order to receive the signals. Back in those days you had to pay for the equipment but then you basically had free satellite television.

In the mid 80's the major networks started to encrypt their signals. This reduced the amount of free satellite programs that were available. So, satellite tv consumers started to buy descrambler boxes in order to view satellite television. The early 90's saw many new companies start launching satellites so that they could get into the satellite tv market. These days there are basically just two companies to choose from. Either Dish Network or Directv®.
