DVR Digital Video Recording

If you happen to have a subscription with a cable television or satellite tv company, it is probably a good idea to use the DVR's that they provide. However, if you would like to have more recording time or the ability to record DVD's, then you might want to choose ReplayTV, TiVO, or a combination DVD/Hard Drive recorder.

Stand alone DVR's are generally priced from $100 to over $1000. TiVO and ReplayTV both offer models that are right around $100. These basic models can record up to 40 hours of television programming. As the hours of recording increase, so does the price.

Most cable and satellite tv providers offer a DVR service for a monthly charge. They normally charge less than $20 for this service. Some satellite tv offers will even give you their DVR service for free. Most of the time these DVR's remain the property of the cable or satellite tv provider and are merely leased to you.
