About Dish NetworkThe DISH Network brand name was established by EchoStar. They started in 1980 when Charlie Ergen, their Chairman and CEO, decided to enter the satellite tv industry as a distributor of C-band TV systems. Their arena of operations rapidly went through an expansion period and the company gained a reputation for innovative techniques, while at the same time keeping a focus on being able to provide their customers with state-of-the-art systems, equipment and service. EchoStar filed for a Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) license with the Federal Communications Commission In 1987. At this time they were given access to orbital slot 119° West Longitude. They then started heading toward being able to provide their own DBS service. This was accomplished when they successfully launched EchoStar I on December 28, 1995. This greatly expanded Dish Network's capacity. They then continued to gain new orbital slots. EchoStar III was launched on October 5, 1997. EchoStar IV was launched on May 8, 1998, and EchoStar V on September 23, 1999. EchoStar VI was launched on July 14, 2000. These days there are a total of nine satellites that make up the EchoStar fleet. They now can provide hundreds of digital video channels as well as audio and data services by way of the Dish Network service which includes programming that is available to single family homes, various businesses and schools throughout the U.S. About Satellite
